The Pagan Origins of the Trinity
Chapter Twelve: A Question of Authority: Whose Kingdom Do You Serve?
Every chapter of this book has followed a single trail: where did the Trinity come from? That trail is now clearly documented. What comes next is a personal question—and it is the one the documented trail makes impossible to avoid:
By what authority was the doctrine of the Trinity established—and whose authority do you stand under when you defend it?
The answer to the first half is not in dispute. The apostles did not establish the Trinity. The first-century church did not receive it. It was not stated in the Shema—but ‘one He’ was, every time it was repeated—which Jesus himself affirmed as the greatest commandment.
Outside of Scripture, a form of the Trinity was initially taught by Egyptian hermeticists, Gnostics, and pagan philosophers in roughly that order. Every step taken by those who carried these ideas into the church violated the apostolic mandate to teach no other doctrines, not to be robbed by philosophy, and not to teach for doctrines the commandments of men.
The answer to the second half is what every reader must now settle for themselves. But we aren’t without precedent.
What Jesus Did—and What the Bishops Undid
Jesus refused institutional validation—and was crucified for it. The bishops at Nicaea did the opposite: they submitted the doctrine of God to Rome for examination and authorization—and were rewarded with imperial backing, legal standing, and the silencing of all opposition. Jesus never exemplified or authorized that. He was given all authority in heaven and earth (Matthew 28:18) and needed no Caesar to confirm his God-given authority. The bishops decided they did.
A bigger battle was being waged on this precise turf that went over the heads of the bishops. In the Garden, Adam exchanged God’s authority for the serpent’s reasoning. He had a plain commandment. He had God’s word. He traded it for the serpent’s offer of a different kind of knowing—autonomous, self-directed, independent, and contrary to what God commanded. The result was bondage dressed as enlightenment.
Jesus reversed all that as part of his mission to set captives free and open blind eyes. At every point where Adam failed, Jesus overcame. When Satan himself offered him all the authority and glory of those kingdoms—the same kingdoms that would later enforce the Trinitarian formula at sword’s point—Jesus refused:
“The devil said to him, ‘I will give you all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I want. If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.”’” (Luke 4:6–8)
Jesus went to the cross rather than accept what Satan was offering—authority, glory, and the kingdoms of the world, at the price of allegiance to Satan himself. The bishops at Nicaea accepted exactly that offer, but instead—and more subtly, at the hands of Satan’s legal heirs—imperial authority, legal standing, and the glory of state backing—at the same price: allegiance to Satan’s heirs and the submission of the doctrine of God to Caesar’s approved revision.
“But I am afraid that somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve in his craftiness, so your minds might be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we didn’t preach…you put up with that well enough.” (2 Corinthians 11:3–4)
Being deceived after the manner of Eve is no light charge. What the bishops accomplished was both another Jesus and a precise, documented reversal of what Jesus accomplished—making themselves judges over God’s commandments, elevating their own reasoning above God’s explicitly articulated standard. This is precisely the type of overreach that eventually sparked the Reformation. But the Reformers never went back far enough to address the unbiblical redefinition of God that started it all.
And every informed defender of the Trinity today, having been shown this documented trail, now faces the same choice as Jesus and the bishops faced in their day.
Galatians 1:8–9 Leaves No Room
“But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you any gospel other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed. As we have said before, so I now say again: if any man preaches to you any gospel other than that which you received, let him be cursed.” (Galatians 1:8–9)
Paul does not say “except if a council of bishops agrees.” He doesn’t say “unless you can come up with something that sounds more reasonable to you or to the majority’s way of thinking.” He provides no exceptions. He commanded the opposite:
“Teach no other doctrine.” (1 Timothy 1:3)
“…learn not to think beyond the things which are written…” (1 Corinthians 4:6)
“Throw down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Peter said to “be established in the present truth” (2 Peter 1:12), and Jude exhorted us to “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3).
That established standard is non-negotiable. The apostles were the only ones authorized to establish right-teaching (orthodoxy). The bishops took it upon themselves to reverse that standard and seize apostolic authority for themselves by the authority of Satan’s legal heir. What moral end could possibly result from yielding to Satan’s legal heir?
The Trinity’s defining word—homoousios—was never spoken by the apostles. Rather, Paul said, “We…speak…not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches” (1 Corinthians 2:13). The Holy Spirit never taught the word or the concept of “one substance.”
When Trinitarians ask, “One what?” God already answered:
“…Fear Yahweh your God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you… Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one…You shall fear Yahweh your God; and you shall serve him, and shall swear by his name.” (Deuteronomy 6:2, 4, 13)
One He. By commandment. Written throughout Scripture. Jesus confirmed the “what” when he said:
“You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews.” (John 4:22, Berean Literal Bible)
Jesus endorsed what the Jews knew. Trinitarians went with the non-Jews instead, and they congratulated themselves for doing so.
Homoousios was never received at Sinai, never believed by Jews, not used among believers before the Gnostics, formally renounced by previous councils, and then reversed and imposed by Satan’s legal heir. A doctrine requiring Caesar’s sword to exist and Caesar’s law to survive carries Caesar’s pedigree—not the apostles’. Paul’s anathema stands.
Rome’s Theological Export—and the Command to Come Out
“Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey?” (Romans 6:16)
To receive, confess, and defend the Trinitarian formula is—by Paul’s standard—to present yourself as a servant of the authority that produced it. In this case, that is the authority of the legal heirs to Satan’s throne.
“Come out of her, my people, that you have no participation in her sins, and that you don’t receive her plagues.” (Revelation 18:4)
In John’s day, one city reigned over the kings of the earth—Rome, not Jerusalem, which was a conquered province. And one city sat on seven mountains—Rome’s own ancient boast. Whatever else ‘Babylon’ encompasses, Revelation 17:9 & 17:18 point to Rome with precision. It was Rome—not Jerusalem, not any other power—that convened, enforced, and finalized the Trinitarian formula. “Come out of her” is not only a call to moral separation from Rome’s corruption. It is a call to doctrinal separation from Rome’s theology.
The Ignorance Defense Does Not Hold
“If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.” (Matthew 15:14)
“If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore, your sin remains.” (John 9:41)
The seminary-trained professional Trinitarian apologist stands precisely here. He has read the words of the first commandment from God Himself, that he is ‘one Him.’ He claims sight, knowledge, and education well above the average disciple. He has access to the primary historical sources, most often in the native languages. He knows what God did say and what He did not say. He knows the command not to add or subtract from those words. He knows the serpent’s opening line, “yea, has God said?” while he reasoned away God’s commandment with soothing words, acting like he came to save Eve from a bondage she was never under. He knows Constantine presided over Nicaea and imposed the word homoousios on the bishops. He knows homoousios is not in Scripture. He knows Theodosius enforced the formula by imperial law, that dissenters were exiled and their writings burned, and many were subsequently killed once the word had become the law of the land. He has read the history, knows the command, knows how Jesus condemned teaching for commandments the doctrines of men, and defends the man-made doctrine anyway. In all of this, he is still all in.
Either his seminary failed to educate him, or it failed to give him an understanding of what these things mean in terms of God’s moral standards. Living according to moral standards is the Biblical test of a qualified elder (1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9).
Dismissing the first commandment as an unnecessary moral standard is not ignorance. That is the suppression of truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18), which is a universally understood mark of false teaching. “Let not many of you be teachers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.” (James 3:1)
We see this moral failure in the Old Testament, where we read about the priests of Baal shamelessly ministering in the house of Yahweh. Do we not read these and believe in our hearts we would never fall for such obvious temptations?
2 Kings 21:3–5: “He built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed…He built altars in the house of Yahweh…He built altars for all the army of the sky in the two courts of Yahweh’s house.”
2 Kings 21:7: “He set the engraved image of Asherah that he had made in the house of which Yahweh said to David and to Solomon his son, ‘In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever.’”
2 Kings 23:4–5: “The king commanded…to bring out of the temple of Yahweh all the vessels that were made for Baal, for the Asherah, and for all the army of the sky…He put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places.”
Zephaniah 1:4: “I will stretch out my hand against Judah, and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the idolatrous priests.”
God saw what those priests were doing then in the name of YHWH, so we can be just as sure He sees what they are doing now in the name of Jesus:
Ezekiel 8:5–6: “Then he said to me, ‘Son of man, lift up your eyes now toward the north.’ So I lifted up my eyes toward the north, and saw, north of the gate of the altar, this image of jealousy in the entry. He said to me, ‘Son of man, do you see what they do? Even the great abominations that the house of Israel commits here, that I should go far from my sanctuary?’”
Ezekiel 8:16: “He brought me into the inner court of Yahweh’s house; and see, at the door of Yahweh’s temple, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs toward Yahweh’s temple and their faces toward the east; and they were worshiping the sun toward the east.”
These things were written for our admonition (1 Corinthians 10:11). And yet here we are, in a New Testament context, basically justifying the same rebellion—bringing the trappings of pagan worship into the house of God—by going to Egyptian Hermeticism for the doctrines of homoousios, dual nature, and gods come to earth in the form of men—and calling it worship approved by YHWH.
For the individual who received the doctrine without knowing its origin, the full force of the charge activates at the moment of exposure—and for you reading this, the time has arrived.
“…They took him aside, and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” (Acts 18:26).
That is why this book was written—not to condemn the uninformed, but to bring it into the light, as John 3:20–21 describes.
God is the judge. Scripture distinguishes between complete ignorance and unrepentant error after exposure. But ignorance is no longer an excuse when knowledge has been gained.
The Garden Still Teaches
The serpent did not deny that God existed. He subjected God’s plain commandment to reasoning that arrived at a different conclusion than what God had so plainly commanded. As if God didn’t know how to explain Himself or purposely meant to deceive by His words.
Every knowing defender of the Trinity today re-enacts Adam’s exchange—choosing human reasoning over what God plainly commanded, not only in its origin, but in every interpretation of a proof text they use to defend it.
This is easy to prove. Find one verse that says God is “one essence” or “a Trinity of three persons in one essence.” You will soon discover that God never inspired those words. Without exception, every proof text Trinitarians claim for the Trinity requires that formulation to be read into the text, not drawn out of it. The authority for that reading is nothing more than human reasoning claiming it must mean that. They call it a mystery. Yet they articulate it fluently and confidently. That is not a mystery. That is a double standard. And that is what elevating human reasoning above Scripture looks like in practice. That is precisely how they replace what God articulated with what He never said, never hinted at, and had already contradicted by commandment: ‘one He.’
This is the fork in the road: who do you trust—God’s commandment or human reasoning to the contrary taught by the legal heirs of the father of lies?
The tree test Jesus established has not changed:
“For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit.” (Luke 6:43)
The fruits of the Nicene tree are well documented in the historic record, and merely mentioned here. They were the inevitable fruit of a system whose authority came from Satan himself, ruler of this world’s systems, whose job has always been to make God’s commandment of no effect and replace it with a lie.
But Jesus speaks with another voice and another sound:
“If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
And John makes it even clearer:
“This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commandments. One who says, ‘I know him,’ and doesn’t keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth isn’t in him. But God’s love has most certainly been perfected in whoever keeps his word. This is how we know that we are in him.” (1 John 2:3–5)
Summary—In this chapter, I have noted or documented, if not established:
✦ That the Trinity’s complete lineage—from Gnostics and pagan philosophers through Constantine and Theodosius—violates the apostolic mandate at every step taken by those who carried it into the church.
✦ That the Nicene bishops made themselves judges over God’s commandments—the same move that sparked the Reformation, which never went back far enough to address the unbiblical redefinition of God that started it all.
✦ That Galatians 1:8–9 places the Nicene formula under anathema—a verdict that does not bend for sincerity, tradition, or centuries of acceptance.
✦ That God himself answered, “One what?” with ‘one He,’ by commandment, confirmed by Jesus in John 4:22 and Mark 12:29–33.
✦ That homoousios carries Caesar’s pedigree, not the apostles’—never received at Sinai, never believed by Jews, not used among believers before the Gnostics, formally renounced before being reversed by Satan’s legal heir.
✦ That defending a Rome-produced doctrine is—by Romans 6:16—a functional act of allegiance to Rome’s kingdom.
✦ That “come out of her” carries a doctrinal application—separation not only from Rome’s corruption but from Rome’s theology.
✦ That the ignorance defense does not hold—and that the seminary-trained apologist who knows all of this and is still all in is not ignorant. He is suppressing the truth in unrighteousness. But he is not beyond mercy upon repentance.
✦ That the serpent’s method has never changed—using reasoning to negate God’s commandments—and the same trade is still being offered and accepted every time a proof text is used to defend a doctrine never stated in Scripture.
“Has God really said?”
God has said. He said, “One He.” He said it by commandment. Jesus affirmed it. The apostles maintained it. It was never modified in all of Scripture. And now you know the answer to the real mystery of “who done it?”
What you do with that answer is between you and Him. But Jesus gave us the mandate to discern the fruit of such decisions.
